Chapter History

Chapter History

On April 7, 1945, Richmond (Virginia) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. received its charter. The Charter members and initial officers were:

  • Dr. Jesse M Tinsley, Polemarch
  •
  • Booker T Bradshaw, Vice Polemarch
  •
  • Mathew C. Carter, Recorder
  •
  • Lyman B. Dillard, Strategus
  •
  • Everett B Pool, Keeper of the Exchequer
  •
  • Wilcox Brandon
  •
  • David Cross
  •
  • John M. Sweat
  •
  • Rev. Warren A. Evans
  •
  • Walter O. Bradley
  •

Just as there was an eleventh Kappa founder in 1911, General Johnson is also   known as the eleventh charter member of the Richmond Alumni Chapter.

Kappadom first came to Richmond, Virginia in 1927 with the chartering of   Alpha Gamma Chapter, the first undergraduate chapter in Virginia. Alpha Gamma   Members played a pivotal role in the chartering of Richmond Alumni. Alpha Gamma   has continued to play an integral role in supporting Richmond Alumni for over 60   years.

At the time of the organizational meeting, World War II had ended, but   Richmond, Virginia, as well as the solid south, was legally segregated along   racial lines. There were laws which required unequal treatment of Blacks in   housing, education, voting rights, employment and public accommodations.  Because of the lack of employment opportunities, the chapter opened its   catchment area to a 50 mile radius. This provided the opportunity for the chapter   to serve the larger community and the nation.

Richmond (VA) Alumni Chapter Silhouettes

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., led by Grand Polemarch, Dr. Oliver S.  Gumbs, officially recognized the Silhouettes as an auxiliary to the Fraternity   in 1980. Also, the Board of Directors of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.,  granted a seat on the Board of the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation to the National   Silhouette President. This was an accomplishment for all Silhouettes. On   September 11, 1987, Policy Statement No. 87-12 was entered into the records of   Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., recognizing the Silhouettes as an affiliate   whose purpose is to provide support and assistance for the activities of the   Fraternity at Grand Chapter, Province, and Local levels.

The purpose of the National Silhouette organization of wives, widows and   sweethearts of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., has been to promote the   organization of local Silhouette chapters, provide activities for visiting   Silhouettes during Kappa Conclaves, develop national service projects of   interest to all Silhouette chapters, establish uniform policies and procedures   for all local chapters and most importantly to serve as the official auxiliary   to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Within the framework of the Kappa Silhouettes philosophy of self-realization   through service, chapters work to implement national program goals in varied   ways depending upon their local communities and the special resources of the   particular chapter. Through these activities, chapters have made numerous   significant contributions.

Guide

HISTORY OF GUIDE RIGHT

In the infancy of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity when chapters were blossoming   and flourishing throughout the length and breadth of the United States, both   individual and collective efforts were being made to incorporate meaningful   programs into the various local chapter activities.

The very foundation of Guide Right can be traced to the St. Louis Alumni   Chapter and Leon W. Steward, who rightfully is dubbed as the "Father of the   Guide Right Movement".

According to the story of Kappa Alpha Psi, soon after the St. Louis Alumni   Chapter’s beginning in 1921, Brothers Leon W. Steward and J. Jerome Peters were   assigned to study the needs of active chapters for guidance and funds and to   devise a "meaningful and practical approach" to the problem.

Ultimately, Brother Steward, a Y.M.C.A. secretary, proposed a program of   guidance to the designated as Guide Right, with the purpose of assisting high   school seniors to choose and pursue useful careers, consistent with fraternity   purpose. This program was immediately adopted at the local level and the 12th   Grand Chapter adopted Guide Right as the national service program.

The focus of Guide Right, from its inception, was to provide scholarships to   needy and talented students, and to inform young people in the professions and   career options.

OBJECTIVES OF GUIDE RIGHT

The basic objectives of Guide Right may be summarized as follows:

  1. To inspire service in the public interest through the cultural enrichment   and character development of high school males.
  2.
  3. To develop leadership skills while monitoring, encouraging, and rewarding   outstanding academic performance.
  4.
  5. To refined self-image, self-esteem, social skills, and environmental   awareness.
  6.
  7. To assist parents in the handling of their children by giving them   opportunities to talk over problems with those who know and are successful in   their chosen vocations.
  8.
  9. To afford the less fortunate youths a respite from the drudgery of the   streets, through sponsored entertainment and cultural enrichment.
  10.
  11. To inform youth of the value of higher education, assistance available for   continued educational pursuits, scholarships, loans, professional counseling,  and fellowships.

Kappa Alpha Psi’s commitment to young people is well established and our   Guide Right efforts, both individual and collective, can contribute to serve as   a mechanism to "inspire service in the public interest."

GUIDE RIGHT COMMITTEES

Community Service Committee

Responsible for managing initiatives and projects with community-based organizations in the Richmond area. Project partnerships have been established with the Richmond Children’s Home, Richmond Public Schools, and the Richmond Social Services Department.

Kappa League Program

Responsible for managing activities, events and programs designed around mentoring developing metro area high school males.

What is the Richmond Kappa League?

The Richmond Kappa League is a community based organization of Kappa Alpha   Psi Fraternity, Inc. comprised of young men from the Richmond Virginia   metropolitan area high schools, with specific emphasis on leadership development   and self motivation for academic, and career achievement.

Richmond Kappa League members, through club oriented activities, perform   projects that will expose them to the planning, execution, and reporting of   ideas and development of good leadership characteristics.

The fundamental purpose of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is achievement;  therefore the primary charge of the Richmond Alumni’s Kappa League Committee is   to help young men achieve worthy goals for themselves and to make constructive   contributions to their communities when leadership roles become their   responsibility.

All activities and programs of Kappa League are comprised from one or more of   the following phases of the Guide Right Kappa Instructional League Program.

  1. Self- Identity
  2.
  3. Training
  4.
  5. Competition
  6.
  7. Social
  8.
  9. Health Education
  10.

Through the assistance of family, community, as well as the Fraternity, has   been essential in proving the experiences that are necessary for realizing these   ends. The Richmond Alumni Chapter continually commits itself to the task of   helping young men who will be future leaders.

Membership

Objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

  1. To unite college men of culture, patriotism and honor in a bond of Fraternity.
  2. To encourage honorable achievement in every field of human endeavor.
  3. To promote, the spiritual, social, intellectual and moral welfare of members.
  4. To assist the aims and purposes of colleges and universities.
  5. To inspire to service in the public interest.

Membership Information

Membership is a solemn commitment. To this Fraternity, the maker of the commitment becomes synonymous with the commitment itself. Membership in Kappa Alpha Psi is a lifelong dedication to the ideas and lofty purposes of Kappa Alpha Psi, which considers for membership only those aspirants whose personal, social and academic qualifications are acceptable to both the College and Fraternity.

Expectations concerning maturity and dedication are made upon new members and established members alike.

Maturity is more than simply reaching a certain age. Maturity to us means acceptance of reality, the ability to sacrifice and set goals, consideration of others, incisive judgment, emotional balance, development of social skills, intellectual competence, and moral rectitude. We expect our members to be mature.

Dedication means putting those characteristics of maturity into a lifelong program of action to advance the goals and purposes of Kappa Alpha Psi. We expect our members to be dedicated.

But do not let personal goals supersede those of the Fraternity. A person who feels he would do the Fraternity a favor by joining is not worthy of membership. No one who holds himself superior to the Brotherhood of Kappa Alpha Psi is worthy of this distinction.

Kappa Alpha Psi is not interested in the simple accumulation of members and chapters. Its emphasis, however, is in the quality and integrity of its membership. Membership quality manifests itself through an intangible element of brotherhood we call “that Good Old Kappa Spirit.”

Acceptable Qualities of Kappa Alpha Psi Members Include:

  • The disposition to live in close companionship with men of similar values.
  • The wisdom to abide by the will of the majority without sacrificing individuality.
  • The discretion to refrain from destructive criticism while seeking to remove the causes of such criticism.
  • The acceptance of responsibility for any effort that moves the group forward.
  • The desire to strive for, and ultimately achieve, excellence in everything you do.
  • The commitment to train for leadership.
  • The resolution to give lifelong financial support and commitment to the maintenance and development of the Fraternity’s programs and purposes.

Founders

Kappa Alpha Psi , a college fraternity, now comprised of functioning Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the country, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision shared commonly by the late Revered Founders Elder Watson Diggs, “The Dreamer”; John Milton Lee ; Byron K. Armstrong; Guy Levis Grant; Ezra D. Alexander; Henry T. Asher; Marcus P. Blakemore; Paul W. Caine; Edward G. Irvin and George W. Edmonds.

It was the vision of these astute men that enabled them in the school year 1910 - 11, more specifically the night of January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, to sow the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is available to, and now enjoyed by, college men everywhere, regardless of their color, religion or national origin. It is a fact of which KAPPA ALPHA PSI is justly proud that the Constitution has never contained any clause which either excluded or suggested the exclusion of a man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or national origin. The Constitution of KAPPA ALPHA PSI is predicated upon, and dedicated to, the principles of achievement through a truly democratic Fraternity.

A History of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity

A History of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity

Chartered and incorporated originally under the laws of   the State of Indiana as Kappa Alpha Nu on May 15, 1911, the name was changed to   KAPPA ALPHA PSI on a resolution offered and adopted at the Grand Chapter in   December 1914. This change became effective April 15, 1915, on a proclamation by   the then Grand Polemarch, Elder Watson Diggs. Thus, the name acquired a   distinctive Greek letter symbol and KAPPA ALPHA PSI thereby became a Greek   letter Fraternity in every sense of the designation.

From its inception, and for the next six years, Brother   Diggs served as the Grand Polemarch of KAPPA ALPHA PSI Fraternity. Through his   leadership and indefatigable application, augmented by the efforts of B.K.  Armstrong, and John M. Lee, who comprised the remainder of the original Grand   Board of Directors, the infant Fraternity was guided through the most perilous   years of its life. Accordingly, much of the credit for the organization’s   survival through this period is shared by these three men.

From its inception, every endeavor was directed toward   establishing the Fraternity upon a strong foundation before embarking on plans   of expansion. By the end of the first year, working together, Diggs and   Armstrong had completed the ritual and had commenced work on the coat of arms.  Work on the latter was completed during the following summer by Diggs, Armstrong   and Lee while they were pursuing employment at a hotel in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In selecting a suitable motto, Diggs, Armstrong and Lee   solicited the aid of a Professor of Greek Art at Indiana Technical College at   Fort Wayne, Indiana. Having adopted a motto which mutually suited them, they   carried a sketch of the coat of arms to a commercial engraver in Fort Wayne,  from which he made the first metal plate.

For years, in order to safeguard the ritualistic secrets of   the Fraternity, Diggs laboriously typed and bound the rituals. It was not until   he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he met an old German printer in whom he   had confidence, that he entrusted the esoteric materials of the Fraternity to a   commercial printer.

In the spring of 1912 Diggs wrote in a little blue   examination book the first Constitution, which was adopted in 1920 with but a   few revisions. This edition remained in use until 1926 when it was supplanted by   the codified edition jointly written by Diggs, J. Ernest Wilkins, and W. Ellis   Stewart. In 1957 the Constitution again underwent major revision.

Now substantially established and provided with a   Constitution, Ritual, coat of arms, motto, and guiding hand in a dynamic Grand   Chapter, the Fraternity was ready for expansion. In the summer of 1912 Diggs   visited the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois, where he met Earl B.  Dickerson, President of the Old "Illini Club." This club constituted the nucleus   of the University of Illinois Chapter, the Beta, which was chartered on February   8, 1913. Gamma Chapter (later changed to Indianapolis Alumni Chapter) was   established on December 29, 1913, followed by the establishment of Delta Chapter   at the University of Iowa, on March 7, 1914. The latter was subsequently changed   to Gamma Chapter, and the designation of Delta assigned to the Wilberforce   University Chapter at Wilberforce, Ohio. Epsilon Chapter, Lincoln University,  Pennsylvania, was established December 4, 1915, as the first chapter in the   East. Elder W. Diggs journeyed from Indiana to give this chapter his personal   and official installation, recognition and blessing.

Thus ended the infancy of KAPPA ALPHA PSI, whereupon the   Fraternity embarked upon an era of expansion. Except for the years of World War   I and II, when several Grand Chapter meetings were suspended, KAPPA ALPHA PSI   has grown and prevailed with unabating impetus.

KAPPA ALPHA PSI Fraternity, relatively early, envisioned   the modified attitudes of college administrators and administrations regarding   certain frivolous activities previously identified with Greek letter   organizations; and it initiated appropriate changes. Among the early changes   brought about was the banning of paddling and other forms of physical abuse, and   the introduction of constructive endeavors during pledgeship and probation. To date, KAPPA ALPHA PSI Fraternity is organizationally and administratively   mature. It moves steadily toward a tomorrow of promise, productivity and   influence.

Overview

Brief Overview

Kappa Alpha Psi (KAΨ) is a collegiate Greek-letter fraternity with a predominantly African American membership. Since the fraternity’s founding on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University Bloomington, the fraternity has never limited membership based on color, creed or national origin. The fraternity has over 150,000 members with 700 undergraduate and alumni chapters in every state of the United States, and international chapters in the United Kingdom, Germany, Korea, Japan, the Caribbean, Saint Thomas, Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Nigeria, and South Africa.

The president of the national fraternity is known as the Grand Polemarch, who assigns a Province Polemarch for each of the twelve provinces (districts/regions) of the nation. The fraternity has many notable members recognized as leaders in the arts, athletics, business, civil rights, education, government, and science sectors at the local, national and international level. The Kappa Alpha Psi Journal is the official magazine of the fraternity since 1914. The Journal is published four times a year in February, April, October and December. Frank M. Summers was the magazine’s first editor and later on became the Fourteenth Grand Polemarch. The current editor of the magazine is Dr. Keflyn X. Reed.

Kappa Alpha Psi is a major contributor in the fields of political, social, cultural and scholastic achievement. The fraternity sponsors programs providing community service, social welfare and academic scholarship through the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation and is a supporter of the United Negro College Fund and Habitat for Humanity. Kappa Alpha Psi is a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). The fraternity is the first predominantly African American Greek-letter society founded west of the Appalachian Mountains still in existence, and is known for its “cane stepping” in NPHC organized step shows.

Welcome Message

Welcome to the home page of the Richmond (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.

image

My Brothers of Richmond Alumni,

Greetings and thank you for a very successful year!

I appreciate the chapter’s vote of confidence to serve another term as Polemarch and look forward to another rewarding year.

During my first term, we became fiscally sound, retained a large chapter roster, reclaimed five plus members, and recruited a chapter high of 11 new brothers.  We also held successful events that promoted our fraternity’s mission and addressed community issues that promoted goodwill for all humanity.  WE successfully joined our resources, time and minds together to make our world a phenomenal force.  Without you, this would not have been possible.

But we must not stop Nupes; there is still a lot of work to be done.  If you did not get the opportunity to join in on one of our many programs, please identify an area in which your service can help the chapter continue to achieve.  This is an exciting time in Kappa and we want everyone to enjoy the ride.  Remember, there are others in the word brothers and we need each other to fulfill our founders’ goals and objectives.

Again thanks for a wonderful year and let’s keep spreading inspiration and answering the fraternity’s call of service.

Yours in the Bond,
